Life is to short!

Black and White LaptopThere is chaos in your surroundings; don’t let it come for your mind. Give yourself a chance to enjoy life, make mistakes, learn from them, and try again. If you become your own worst enemy, you won’t be able to succeed. See outside the box, be the person you envision yourself to be. It takes time to find yourself, but that’s the beauty of it all. You are able to explore and seek what you like and dislike. You create experiences, memories, and objects that will allow you to evolve and find meaning for what you are passionate about. Don’t allow time, predicaments, or circumstances to dictate the route your destiny will be. It’s a part of growing and in time, it will pass.

Life is journey that takes you through different experiences. There are times you may feel at a loss and without the willpower to get through. It happens, but don’t allow it to overwhelm you or make you feel like a failure. Just allow your mind and body to reset itself and get back on track. Life is to short to surround yourself with negativity. It’s okay to spend time perfecting your vision–don’t allow your doubts to take over. Take the risk of getting to know yourself before the defeat.

What to wear for an interview

So now you have your resume and portfolio prepared, and you’ve done your research on your potential employer. Next stop: what should I wear?

Interview 2Appearance is a key factor. I’m a bit old-fashioned when it comes to making sure you wear casual formal attire for an interview. It makes you look serious about the position and prepared for the job ahead. Once you are in the interview, they will see your character and can see what a great person you are. You don’t want to wait until the last minute, scrambling to get ready for the interview. Regardless of the type of job, a first impression should be a great one. That doesn’t mean you have to wear a pantsuit; dress accordingly in business attire. Don’t go in your pajamas, obviously, but if you are applying for a position in a more casual environment, such as store or restaurant, it’s still important to be neat, tidy and well-groomed. Present yourself as a positive image to the employer. When wearing makeup and accessories, don’t go for flashy. Make it more reserved; you’re not going clubbing. This shows how seriously you are taking the opportunity and shows your level of respect for the interviewer. Startups tend to be a lax atmosphere and dress code, so if you show up for a job interview in a suit and tie or conservative dress, you may give off the impression you are too uptight for the laid-back culture. Another example is a creative agency, where the traditional interview outfit may come across as unoriginal or boring. You can usually get away with adding something extra to show your originality and personality. Of course, there are still organizations where employees are expected to wear suits every day, such as law offices or finance industry firms. This is where researching the company you are applying for comes in handy. You want to make sure that you are able to be a part of the team and help them and yourself grow.

I tend to confuse the attire for interviews at times. It’s been a while since I’ve done one, but some details that I use to help me decipher office dress codes are:

Business professional: In a business professional atmosphere, suits are common and the basis of daily wear. Women might wear a skirt or pantsuit with heels.

Business casual: Don’t worry about having to wear a  suit when interviewing at a business casual company. You might consider wearing a conservative dress, a blouse (or sweater) with a skirt, or dress pants and dress shoes or boots.

Casual: When interviewing at a casual office, it’s still important to look polished and professional. That doesn’t mean you should go all the way with jeans and flip flop before getting hired. You might want to wear a collared shirt with pants or a pencil skirt or work dress.

Interview 3
Interview appearance

The interviewer is going to notice everything about you, including your interview attire, hairstyle, and makeup. With your skills, experience, and capability, you will ultimately win the job, but how you present yourself can impact the hiring manager’s impression of you. Your appearance is the reflection of your level of professionalism.

Talk about what you have done to prepare yourself to be the best candidate for the position. Use examples to back it up during the interview. Then ask if they like more details. Give them a background of your work and experience.  You must show them they are doing a great investment in bringing you into the team.  Any job interviews you have form an entry level to the board of directors can be nervous, anxious affairs and one of the key factors in determining if your interview will ultimately be successful is how prepared you are.  Your interview is a two-way street. The interviewer wants to find out about you, but it also is your chance to find out about the company and what your role will be. Be interested and enthusiastic but not pushy and rude. Stay relaxed and listen carefully. Above all BE YOURSELF!!

Interview Tricks

Interviewing for a new job can be a bit intimidating. After all, it’s not something that you do every day. Most people who interview for a job are either recent grads that are looking to get their first real work experience, or they’re already experienced workers who have been with the same company for a long time and are ready to move on to something new. Here are some helpful tips to help you make a better impression and get you into the door to your new career.

Preparing for the interview

Prepare your portfolio and resume ahead of time and practice using it so that you know where everything is located

Do your research on the company and the position that you’re interviewing for

Practice your answers but don’t make the sound rehearsed just focus on hitting the main points

Dress professionally and make sure you are well groomed

Bring any materials you may need including a business card, resume, and portfolio

Bring a notebook and a pen or pencil so that you can take notes or jot down questions

Be on time and allow for extra travel time in case you get lost or run into traffic

37.jpgDuring the interview

Make a good first impression with a nice, firm handshake

Be friendly, polite, and remember to smile

Display confidence through body language, don’t slouch in your chair or look down when you’re speaking

Speak loudly and enunciate when giving your answers

Always try to frame your answers in a way so that they relate to the job and why you’re the best candidate for it

Be honest- it’s better to turn down a job you’re not a good match for than to try to fake it until you make it

Prepare yourself for curveball questions you didn’t train for- take time to answer them

Ask for some time to think if you need a second to formulate your thoughts

If you are unsure of what the interviewer is asking you, politely request a more detailed explanation.

After the interview

Thank the interviewer for their time

Give the interviewer samples of your work if you have copies for them to keep (also called takeaways)

Nancy M. Johnson. The Inventor

For this week’s Women Who Rock, Nancy Johnson has shown us that you can be a creator regardless of your position in life and you can change things no matter what position you find yourself.

Ice craem 3[1316]

Who can resist the sweet taste of ice cream?

Summer heat waves are here and what sweeter way to enjoy the summer than with a delicious cone of ice cream. With so many flavors to choose from, makes me wonder if I could create them all at home!

Nowadays you can find several recipes online to make the perfect match for your taste buds.

I have to thank a New England housewife, Nancy Johnson who is helped bring the art of creating ice cream to the home. She is known as the inventor of the first hand-cranked ice cream churn back in 1846. She created an “artificial freezer” containing a tub, cylinder, lid, dasher, and crank, a design that is still popular today. She patented her design but without the capital to manufacture and market it, she sold the patent to a kitchen wholesaler who began producing the churn and selling it publicly.

Making ice cream at the time was time consuming and difficult to create. It would take longer periods of producing causing high costs and time.  Johnson’s solution was simple: instead of opening the bucket to stir the liquid by hand, she attached a hand crank to the outside of the bucket which twisted the pot on the inside. Her invention was a huge step forward for ice cream. It didn’t only make the process easier—it also made ice cream with a smoother texture.

Nancy Johnson is an inventor. She had the strength and ability to come up with a dream and create it.

We can learn from her accomplishments ,we ourselves can become an inventor and create something that can move us forward. We can aspire to do more and accomplish things that help us all move forward.
